BRIEF MENTIONS OF RAPE AND CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE BELOW. Please be careful.
Character Information
Name: (Brother) Nier
Canon: Nier Replicant
Canon Point: Post Ending D
Age: 21
History: The Red and the Black is a short story pertaining to Nier's background and available online. Content warnings for said story include references to child sexual abuse and rape, so please be careful. Otherwise, everything else can be found on his wiki page.
Personality:
"I know."
The gentle big brother who will lend a helping hand to anyone — who can soothe you to sleep, who will run his fingers through your hair and tell you did a good job on the most difficult of days, who will pack you lunch and accept you with open arms even when the world would choose to reject you. At a glance, that is who Nier is. He is rational and benign while carrying a confident air that allows him to lead when he must. Above all, he is described as "unyielding" and is characterized by his devotion to others; if destroying the world for the sake of those he loves is the only viable conclusion in his eyes, it is one he will pursue without remorse. This devotion tends to win over the hearts of others, regardless of the destruction it may yield. He works relentlessly, if not to the point of fatigue. Hard working, resourceful and absurdly dedicated, Nier is terribly active; always doing and never quite thinking.
It started long ago. His parents passed away when he was young — he'd hardly known his father and been forced to witness the untimely death of his mother with his very own eyes. This tragedy had left him with a 2 year old sister at the age of 9.
Raising her was an obligation. But he couldn't help but view it as a reason for living, despite everything. Yonah is Nier's world. She is the reason he lives, and without her, all that remains is white noise. Nothing else. For her, he would do anything. He would work multiple jobs at a time from the mere age of 10, run himself ragged, cook, clean and tend to her sickly state on a day to day basis. Serving as a caretaker was the only reality he knew. He abandoned all for the sake of Yonah — schooling, childhood and play were lost to his familial duty. At the age of 15, he reached a breaking point wherein he became a sex worker simply to ensure that she was medicated and could see yet another day.
It destroyed him. Being violently and personally degraded by those around him left him with a thirst for violence, and a bitterness for humanity at large. He would go on to brutally murder the client who had coerced him into their relationship. It was through the hands of others that he'd learn what violence truly was.
But that was fine, so long as he had her.
Brother Nier is kind, patient and loving. He will do anything for his family. He will accept even the most grotesque and unconventional of beings. These are all truths.
But they are not the only truths.
Because in that same vein, he is vindictive, vengeful, violent and unbridled. Nier is a powder keg. He is terribly self centered. He never chose to be a parent, never wanted to be. He harbors a strong, incredibly quiet resentment for people — the byproduct of being abused, exploited and left to his own devices. Nier enjoys bloodshed. He derives a sense of power from it unlike anything else. Powerlessness is a feeling he's well acquainted with, but killing allows him to reclaim his autonomy in the only way he knows how. More than anything in this world, he hates the "Shades"; the monsters he believes to be responsible for his sister's abduction.
The Shades, however, are nothing more than innocent human beings attempting to defend themselves. Nier does not consider this truth. He doesn't need to. Instead, he brutally slaughters every last one of them. It's the only way he knows how to cope. The only "truth" he knows is his own.
He spent 5 years having done nothing but kill.
Simply put, Nier is the embodiment of human will. Yonah is less of an individual to him, and moreso a reason to keep going. He does not think of her as a person, but rather "all he has" in the world and his sole motivation for existing. Nier is capable of being both compassionate and cruel in equal, albeit in great, measures because he does not think of the consequences of his actions. He is childish and self involved. Frankly, Nier is immersed in his own desire, want and self imposed duty.
And ironically enough, this selfishness is precisely why he can help other people and why he consistently has the strength to do so. There's nothing to lose if you don't reflect on the consequences of your actions. Nier operates on his own moral compass and value system — no one else's. He places his faith in himself, his own feelings and his own judgement. As a result, his dearest friends are those who have been outcast and subjugated by the world. What the "world" decides is of little importance to him.
After all, when the world told him he was meant to die for the greater good's sake, he instead chose to destroy the greater good entirely. That's simply who Nier is. He is himself — nothing will rob him of that certainty.
Other select words used to describe him are "yandere", "stupid", "psychopathic", "airheaded", "talented, "hypocritical" and "ideal housewife".
Abilities & Skills:
SWORD/LANCE/AXE MASTERY: Nier is a potent and notably skilled fighter who is proficient in multiple forms of combat. By endgame, he's mastered his ability to utilize blades ranging from katanas to greatswords, lances and axes in battle. He is also highly skilled in close quarted combat.
HIGH CONSTITUTION/STAMINA: Nier is capable of weathering blows that would be deadly to most through sheer will. An example would be when he was stabbed through the chest and shoulder at 16 and managed to survive the assault. Later, he demonstrates an ability to last through extremely exhausting and prolonged fights via his own determination. This can also be attributed to his rigorous training regimen and experience in the frontlines.
JUMPING REALLY HIGH: He can jump up to a good 10 feet high in canon. There's no actual reason for this, he just can.
BATTLE STRATEGY: Nier is often regraded as a one man army not only due to his physical capabilities, but his ability to study and analyze his enemies accordingly. An apt tactician, Nier knows how to tackle fights of a much grander scrale and operates as a soldier would.
His magical powers are dependent on his pact partner, Grimoire Weiss, a sentient tome that allows him to tap into a great magical source known as the "Sealed Verses." Due to the power Weiss has bestowed onto him, he has the ability to use...
SHADOW MANIPULATION/DARK MAGIC: Nier has the ability to conjure a pair of shadow arms, lances, spears and barriers through the power of Grimoire Weiss; these arms consist of a dark, concentrated form of mana and have the ability to grow to the size of a building, destroy living creatures and objects alike, and are mobile/maneuvered just as a pair of regular arms would be. They are essentially incorporeal — and are therefore resistant to physical force while having the ability to shapeshift or traverse through different mediums/small spaces accordingly.
It's something akin to shadow puppetry.
Nier can perform incredibly powerful spells and attacks known as the Sealed Verses and "Words". At this canon point, he is capable of utilizing:
SUPERHUMAN AUGMENTATION: Through the power of Grimoire Weiss' "Words", Nier can essentially "buff" his own skills. This applies to his magical abilities, physical capabilities (such as stamina, speed, luck, resistance and strength) and more. Gameplay mechanics in mind, these buffs can allow him to survive assaults and attacks that an ordinary human would unable to.
Inventory/Companions:
- His greatsword, Beastlord
- A rucksack containing turnip and moonflower (Lunar Tear) seeds
- Medicinal herbs
- A survival knife
Choice: Vampire (Monster)
Reason: Nier possesses a fervent bloodlust in canon, and I thought it would be interesting to make it manifest more physically; so a literal, actual thirst for blood rather than the metaphorical sort. He draws strength from those around him, as his relationships are what provide him a reason to live, so making him a vampire would actualize this further through a bodily function.
